Overview

Marla Keller, MDThe Department of Medicine
(DOM) at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health
System has a long tradition of conducting
cutting-edge basic, clinical and translational research. We take pride in providing excellent
training, professional development, mentoring and support for our research
faculty. Our collaborative research environment attracts outstanding basic
scientists and clinical investigators from the United States and around the
world.
The DOM’s robust research program, which spans 14 divisions, was ranked 25th in 2015 by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research with $47.5 million in NIH dollars.
Our faculty leads five
NIH-funded Centers of Excellence, two additional Centers of Excellence, and two Programs
of Distinction, in addition to three NIH Training Grants (aging, infectious
diseases and cardiovascular disease).
At any given time, more than 100 clinical trials are ongoing
in the department. Access to diverse patient populations, shared
technologies and a biorepository of over 400,000 human specimens affords our
researchers vast opportunities to translate lab-based discoveries into improved
clinical outcomes. The electronic medical record coupled with advanced
information technology provide a dynamic environment in which to conduct
population-based research.
Mentoring is a critical element to our academic success. Our
strong mentoring program helps talented junior faculty with K awards transition
to their careers as independent investigators. Mentors also inspire residents
and fellows to work on innovative projects in the clinic and the lab, both in
the Bronx community and abroad. The College is now offering a grant proposal advisory service to Einstein investigators. The purpose of this service is to aid investigators in generating high quality, polished proposals in order to increase their chances of securing funding for their research. We
invite you to explore the department of medicine’s wide-ranging research
efforts.
