Growing Hematopoietic Stem Cells

Albert Einstein College of Medicine postdoc Sandra Pinho, Ph.D., discusses her work growing hematopoietic stem cells, which give rise to all blood cells including those of the immune system, such as T cells, macrophages and natural killer cells. Her research examines whether these stem cells are “happier” and grow better in a petri dish when they have the company of another type of stem cell called mesenchymal stem cells. The ultimate goal of this research would be to use these blood stem cells for stem cell therapy. Sandra works in the lab of Paul Frenette, Ph.D., Chair and Director of The Ruth L. and David S. Gottesman Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research.
