Einstein-Cardozo Bioethics Graduate Education

Our History

More than 35 years ago, Nancy Dubler created one of the country's first bioethics consultation services; 20 years later, in response to a palpable need for rigorous training, she developed the celebrated Certificate Program in Bioethics and Medical Humanities. We have a long history of helping practitioners, researchers, administrators, policymakers and students of exceptional vision adapt insights from scholarship to improve care, research and policy in the tri-state area and beyond.

Our bioethics program also draws from our long-standing consultation work at the Montefiore-Einstein Center for Bioethics, located on the premises of Montefiore Medical Center, Einstein's teaching hospital.

Mission Statement

The Einstein Cardozo Master of Science in Bioethics concentrates on practical work in bioethics, including bioethics consultation and mediation, and the ethical analysis of research. Mindful of our home in New York City, we address the challenges that affect a racially and ethnically diverse urban population. Both Einstein and Cardozo hold issues of social justice to be crucial aspects of their mission. The Bioethics program reflects that mission through its focus on aspects of bioethics that can improve patient care.

Our goal is to provide bioethics training that will directly benefit patients and research participants, and promote the development of ethically sound healthcare policy. We offer training programs that meet the needs of health and legal professionals who work on ethics committees, institutional review boards, and other decision-making bodies that are expected to make important, ethically complex assessments.

Our thoughtfully designed curriculum offers the best in bioethics education. Our integration of narrative approaches, consultation and mediation skills, along with legal and public health expertise, provides a carefully thought-out and unique approach to bioethics education.

Learning Objectives:

The goal of the Masters’ Program and the Certificate Program is to train future and current professionals to translate bioethical theory into practice, with a focus on service-oriented aspects of bioethics; these include clinical bioethics consultation, health care ethics policy and the ethical practice of research involving human subjects.
