Fellowships Reproductive Health Fellowship The two-year fellowship in Reproductive Health and Family Planning aims to develop family physicians as clinical, research, and policy leaders in the intersection of family medicine and planning. Fellows focus on integrating reproductive health care into comprehensive family medicine services. To this end, they maintain an active family medicine practice at Montefiore’s family medicine teaching sites; train family physicians in IUD and implant insertion, management of miscarriage, and abortion; and provide family planning services and training at freestanding high-volume clinics. Finally, fellows complete a 1-3 month international placement to learn about family planning, abortion, and reproductive health in less-developed areas. During the two-year fellowship, fellows also complete a Master of Public Health at Columbia University. Each fellow is actively involved with developing and implementing at least one research project, and presenting findings at regional and national meetings. Many fellows have had manuscripts on their projects published in peer-reviewed journals. For more information, contact reprohealthFM@montefiore.org Palliative Medicine Fellowship The Montefiore Palliative Medicine Fellowship program trains physicians to become excellent, compassionate clinicians and leaders in the field of hospice and palliative medicine. The fellowship curriculum consists of a combination of clinical experience and didactic series. Faculty helps to guide fellows in understanding the needs of terminally ill people, providing support throughout the course of advanced illness, and managing physical and emotional factors that contribute to the suffering of patients and their loved ones. Fellows also join in quality improvement work and research. Fellows work with board-certified palliative care physicians, palliative care trained nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, a chaplain, and other interdisciplinary team members at three campuses across Montefiore Health System. Fellows rotate through a 15-bed inpatient palliative care unit, inpatient consultation service, and services including hospice, pediatric palliative care, long-term care, HIV care, addiction medicine, and interventional pain management Applicants must have completed an accredited residency program in family medicine, internal medicine, physical medicine & rehabilitation, or neurology. This fellowship participates in the National Residency Matching Program for fellowship positions. This fellowship is led by the NYC Collaborative for Homeless Healthcare, which partners with faculty in the Department of Family & Social Medicine to implement the Montefiore Einstein DFSM Post-Graduate Curriculum in Homeless Healthcare. The fellowship welcomes graduating residents and early career primary care providers who are passionate about providing care for individuals experiencing homelessness. The NYC Homeless Healthcare Fellowship pairs fellows with experienced homeless healthcare clinicians for clinical training and oversight; provides psychosocial support to promote trauma-informed care, combat burnout and vicarious trauma, and foster resiliency; improves skills related to substance use disorder, wound care, and communicable diseases; and engages fellows in meaningful work to promote skills in advocacy and public health. For more information, contact Yury Parra, M.D. Population Health Fellowship The two-year fellowship in Population Health is a joint initiative of the Department of Family & Social Medicine and Montefiore Hudson Valley Collaborative (MHVC). MHVC leads a group of nearly 200 partner organizations including hospitals, primary care, FQHCs, behavioral health and substance use providers, community-based organizations, local government units, and more in order to implement health care redesign under New York State’s DSRIP program across the lower Hudson River valley. The Public Health fellow is integrated into MHVC’s leadership team with a special focus on one or more projects in improving population health in the region. The fellow will have the opportunity to learn skills including health services research; design, implementation, and scaling of health service redesign initiatives; implementation of training programs and learning collaboratives focused on quality improvement; collaboration across health care and community-based organizations; and/or engagement with health policy leaders.
