Statins and Fractures  — A study published in the November online issue of JAMA Internal Medicine examined the possible link between the anti-cholesterol medicine rosuvastatin and fracture risk in patients with cardiovascular disease who take the drug. Previous studies had reported that statin drugs may reduce the risk of fracture and bone damage. Dr. Jessica Peña and colleagues examined data gathered from a cohort of more than 17,000 men and women enrolled in the JUPITER trial. (JUPITER stands for Justification for the Use of Statins in Prevention: an Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin.) She found no significant difference in fracture risk in the group that received rosuvastatin versus the group that did not. Dr. Peña, is assistant professor of medicine and attending physician at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care.
