Montefiore Einstein residents enjoy a quality of life that’s hard to find in many urban areas: comfortable, affordable housing in an area rich with recreation and entertainment.

Housing

Montefiore Medical Center's Bronx location is easily accessible by train (the 4 and D) train from Manhattan, and by car from Westchester and the other boroughs. About 30 percent of residents live in Montefiore housing, 30 percent in other areas of the Bronx, 30 percent in Manhattan, and the remainder in Westchester and other areas. Residents may apply for Montefiore housing, which consists of two affordable and convenient options; placement is determined by lottery.

Montefiore II ("Monte II") is a 28-story high rise with approximately 400 units located directly across the street from Montefiore I, and is conveniently located to all campuses.

  • Monte II offers central air conditioning, laundry facilities, high-speed elevators, and 24-hour guard service.
  • Apartment sizes range from studios to two bedrooms.
  • Rent includes gas and electricity.
  • All units offer balconies, a refrigerator and a gas range.

Riverdale

With 115 units, Montefiore’s Waldo Avenue building is situated in the Bronx’s historic Riverdale district, approximately seven minutes by car from the Moses campus.

  • These beautiful rentals offer amenities including a large backyard for the use of all tenants, a laundry room, and 24-hour guard services.
  • All units are supplied with a refrigerator and gas range or countertop range. Most units are supplied with a dishwasher.
  • Unit sizes range from studios to 2 bedrooms, most of which have balconies.
  • Montefiore provides free door-to-door shuttle service, at select times, to and from the Moses campus

Many residents also live in other areas of the Bronx, including Norwood, Riverdale, and Mott Haven to name a few areas. Some residents live in Manhattan as well, and typically live near 4 express train stations

Notable Places

  • Bronx Documentary Center - a non-profit community-oriented gallery and educational space featuring works that deal with themes of justice, education and community-building
  • Bronx Museum of the Arts - featuring contemporary works of American artists and exhibitions on design from Latin America, Africa and Asia, and home to a bi-monthly Moth StorySlam
  • The Museum of Bronx History (MBH) at the Valentine-Varian House - the second oldest house in the Bronx and oldest remaining farmhouse, now
  • Andrew Freedman Home - a former mansion now owned by the Mid-Bronx Council and houses an artist-in-residence, various community programs and a small business incubator
  • The High Bridge - oldest bridge in NYC, within walking distance, great views of the city!
  • The Bronx Zoo - one of the largest zoos in the United States

Events

  • Tour de Bronx Cycling - 25 or 40 mile ride through the Bronx, established by the Bronx Borough President and annual Department of Family and Social Medicine tradition with Dr. Selwyn
  • Bronx Night Market - every Saturday/Sunday in Fordham Plaza, bringing together the Bronx food scene
  • Shakespeare at Oval Park - organized by various theater organizations in the city, such as The Public
  • Baseball games at Yankee Stadium - a 15 minute walk from clinic

The Outdoors

  • The New York Botanical Gardens - located in Bronx Park, 250 acres filled with >1 million plants
  • Van Cortlandt Park - hiking trails, biking, sports fields, BBQ grills and driving range; pool free with the NYC Pool Pass
  • Pelham Bay Park and Orchard Beach - the largest public park in the city, home to the only public beach in the Bronx
  • Wave Hill Public Garden - 28 acre public garden and horticultural space with views of the Hudson

Gym

Housestaff are eligible for membership in the Falk Recreation Center, a complete fitness center adjacent to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Open every day (except for Saturdays in June, July, and August), the Falk Center offers a full range of sports and exercise activities, from intramural team competition to yoga and aerobics classes. The Center's early morning and late evening hours make it especially convenient for house officers from both campuses.

Food

Around Moses campus, the main hospital, there are many options to choose from - Dominican (El Presidente, Caribe), Mexican (Queen of Tacos), Indian (Aman, Curry Spot), to various beloved bodegas and local fast food spots.

Around Weiler campus, there is also great Latin American (Caridad), Halal food trucks (Chicken vs Lamb), and Thai (Tana Thai Restaurant)

Around clinic (CHCC), there is Mexican (Amina’s Cafe), Jamaican (Fauzia’s Heavenly Delights) and Indian (Hungry Bird)

The Bronx is also home to some of the nation’s most diverse dining
