This 2-hour intensive workshop run by Language Connect Ed is designed to attain real results for international postdocs in order to produce clear messages when discussing and presenting their research. You will engage in practice activities that promote clear pronunciation of numbers and vocabulary key to your particular research. Likewise, practice activities and role-plays will draw attention to the importance of rhythm and stress in English pronunciation. This workshop will also include language and strategies for clarifying and framing your research message, ultimately creating clear and concise messaging.
You will leave with:
• a list of self-identified research related vocabulary that you find challenging; this will then become your focus vocabulary for improvement during self-practice
• a 3-step approach to improving pronunciation related to syllable and sentence level stress
• a framework for developing your research story in order to hook and engage a variety of audiences
• language stems and phrases for asking for and providing clarification in order to manage breakdowns in communication
• a heightened ability to identify and interpret non-verbal cues from the audience and how to respond
• an approach to continued self-practice post workshop using strategies and tips from the workshop as well as a list of additional recommended resources for self-practice
Throughout the workshops, you will have the opportunity to:
• create a list of vocabulary you personally find challenging to pronounce when discussing your research and an approach to improving pronunciation of these particular words
• explore online resources to support pronunciation practice and gain strategies for identifying syllable stress
• engage in focused pronunciation activities to improve sentence level rhythm and stress as a strategy for keeping audience attention
• engage in role-plays to practice handling breakdowns in communication, asking for and providing clarification in order to manage these breakdowns
