Revisit Woodstock through Einstein’s Woodstock Revival Concert

In 1969, Joan Baez, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Sly & the Family Stone, and Jimi Hendrix were among 32 acts to perform at the legendary Woodstock music festival, held in Bethel, New York.

Members of MoE playing at their first concert on campus, in 2017. Be sure to attend their upcoming tribute to Woodstock’s 50th on September 19!

In celebration of the festival’s 50th anniversary, Musicians of Einstein (MoE) is hosting a Woodstock Revival Concert, which will be held in our Central Courtyard on Thursday, September 19, 2019, at 5:00 p.m.

MoE was established in 2017 to offer musicians on the Einstein campus a way to connect with fellow performers, to come together and play music. The group, which welcomes students, faculty, and staff, has held a variety of performances on campus, some involving several of its members and others, like the Woodstock Revival Concert, welcoming performers from throughout Einstein and Montefiore to share their musical talent.

“Whether someone jams with their own band, prefers to perform solo, or is interested in playing with members MoE, we aim to create an environment where enjoying music is the focus,” noted Allan Spielman, a member of the epidemiology and population health department who is among the keyboard players in MoE. “Members team up in small bands to play music that they mutually enjoy, whether rock, country, blues, or other. We even have horn or string sections that accompany some performers, and anyone from our community is welcome to take part.”

A “ ” to the Einstein Community

While MoE concerts generally have an “anything goes” approach, for the revival concert participating musicians are being encouraged to consider songs originally performed at Woodstock.

“Our hope is to re-create a bit of the vibe from the original Woodstock,” said Athena Konicki, a second-year medical student on the MoE board. “We expect that performers will play actual songs from Woodstock or other music by the artists, but we also will welcome coverage of any band and any genre.”

She added, “Those who prefer to simply enjoy the concert are invited to join us in the Central Courtyard, where we’ll be rockin’ it out by ‘the rocks!’ It’s a neat way to check out some of the great talent we have on campus while reliving the peace and music of the ‘60s!”
