Professional Interests

Haejin In, MD MBA MPH is a surgical oncologist and health services researcher, specializing in upper gastrointestinal diseases with a particular focus in gastric cancer. Dr. In has two main research goals: (1) improving outcomes of gastric cancer patients through identification of methods for early cancer detection and screening, and (2) improving the quality of care and reducing healthcare disparities in gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients.

Dr. In’s studies include the development of a predictive tool to identify individuals who would benefit from gastric cancer screening. She is also interested in the development of biomarkers to detect individuals with and at risk for gastric cancer. Her research also focuses on better understanding drivers of poor outcomes and healthcare disparities in GI cancer patients and identifying areas of improvement in the healthcare system.

Dr. In serves as a member of many national organizations including the American Association for Cancer Research, Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Society of Surgical Oncology, American College of Surgeons and Association for Academic Surgery. She also serves as an expert panelist for upper gastrointestinal cancers for the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) and developed the staging systems for gastric cancer for the latest 8th edition of the AJCC staging manual.

Dr. In received her MD degree from Dongguk University in South Korea. She completed her surgical residency training at Boston Medical Center in Boston, MA and surgical oncology training at the University of Chicago in Chicago, IL. Dr. In has completed two research fellowships, one at the combined Harvard Medical School and its affiliated hospitals (Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital) and at the American College of Surgeons where she examined public health policy and quality improvement for cancer patients. Dr. In also holds an MPH degree from Harvard School of Public Health and an MBA degree in Healthcare Management from Boston University.
