Curriculum

The Division of Rheumatology of Einstein-Montefiore offers a two- or three-year ACGME-approved fellowship program that provides comprehensive training in clinical and investigative Rheumatology, preparing rheumatologists for careers in clinical practice and/or investigative rheumatology. The third year of fellowship, upon approval of the division, is for those fellows interested in intensive research training.

First Year

The first year of the program is devoted to clinical training. The aim of this year is to provide the groundwork for a firm understanding of the principles of clinical Rheumatology through didactic sessions, inpatient and outpatient rotations

  • Attend 3 to 4 outpatient continuity clinics per week
    • 1 clinic will be spent in a Lupus Clinic
    • 2-3 clinic sessions will be spent in General Rheumatology clinics at either Montefiore or Jacobi Medical Center
  • Monthly rotations on the in-patient consult service
    • 4 months are distributed over the East Campus: Jacobi and Weiler Hospitals
    • 6months are distributed over the West Campus: Moses and North Central Bronx Hospital
  • First year didactic sessions dedicated to
    • Fundamental knowledge of disease pathophysiology and management including small group case-based sessions and periodic interval assessments
    • Musculoskeletal radiology including introduction to MSK ultrasound
    • Fundamentals of immunology
    • Culturally responsive and patient centered care including introductions to health disparities, bias, and care for marginalized groups
    • Participation in division and department-wide journal clubs and grand rounds

Second Year

The second year of the training is largely devoted to a research project intended to provide the fellow with an opportunity to explore a particular area of interest under the close supervision of a faculty member.

  • Attend 3 continuity clinics per week
    • 1 clinic will be spent in a Lupus Clinic
    • 2 clinic sessions will be spent in General Rheumatology clinics
  • Protected time for research
    • If the fellow is interested and approved by the division, will begin the first year of the Clinical Research Training Program (hyperlink to CRTP)
  • Dedicated monthly MSKUS procedure clinic
  • Quality Improvement project development

Specialized Curricula

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound curriculum
Our MSKUS curriculum is a 2-year program lead by our USSONAR trained faculty: Dr. Beverly Johnson and Dr. Shereen Mahmood. US training in the first year is intended to supplement clinical training as they learn to correlate physical exam findings with US imaging. Training will providebasic board review of common pathology encountered in US practice. It is intended to provide hands on procedural exposure and gauge interest in further developing US skill for USSONAR certification and future practice.

Training in the second year is intended for fellows to advance and refine their US skill set, allowing them to participate in USSONAR Certification, prepare for future RhMSUS Board Certification, as well as develop clinical research projects. Each MSKUS clinic session will be divided into journal review as well as patient procedures. Training will be divided into Quarterly goals as defined by the USSONAR requirements.

First Year Selective:
This is a 1-month selective program. Fellows continue to participate in their continuity clinics butare given time off of the inpatient service to explore other fields pertinent to radiology fellows spend time in:

  • Orthopedics
  • Pediatric rheumatology
  • Physical Therapy
  • Dermatology
  • Ophthalmology
  • MSK Radiology

CRTP: The Master of Science (M.S.) in Clinical Research Methods is attained through the Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP). This intensive two-year program is designed for those pursuing a career in investigator-initiated, hypothesis-driven clinical research.

CRTP scholars are drawn from all of Einstein’s medical specialties and subspecialties, including those interested in clinical investigation across the entire translational research spectrum, from mechanistic studies to population-based and health services research. The comprehensive program combines didactic learning and coursework with a mentored research experience.
