Montefiore’s new Chronic Sinusitis Center is a “one-stop” service center for people seeking relief for persistent nasal or sinus issues.

Twice a month, an allergist teams up with an ear nose and throat (ENT) specialist to evaluate new patients presenting with symptoms of severe sinusitis, a persistent inflammatory condition of one or more sinuses that can last up to 12 weeks.

During the visit, the allergist performs a skin test to immediately check for environmental allergies and the ENT uses a rhinoscope to examine the nasal passages for the presence of polyps, sinusitis or different anatomical obstructions.

“The idea is that the patient can get two answers in just one visit,” said Denisa Ferastraoaru, MD, co-director of the Chronic Sinusitis Clinic. Dr. Ferastraoaru is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Allergy & Immunology) at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and an attending physician at Montefiore and Jacobi Medical Center.

Determing Course of Treatment

Depending on the test results, the course of treatment is developed and implemented by the allergist or the ENT specialist - or by both - and is personalized for each patient. After a thorough examination and certain tests, patients with severe environmental allergies might benefit from allergy immunotherapy (allergy shots) or newer medications such as monoclonal antibodies.

Teaming Up Twice a Month

Elina Jerschow, MD, MD

Launched in March 2016, the combined clinic is a collaboration between the Department of Medicine’s Division of Allergy & Immunology and the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

Patients are seen at the ENT clinic in the Hutchinson building by one of two Allergy-ENT teams: Dr. Denisa Ferastraoaru and Dr. Nadeem Akbar, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, or Elina Jerschow, MD, an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, Department of Medicine (Allergy & Immunology) and Waleed Abuzeid, MD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery. Primary care physicians are encouraged to refer new patients to the clinic.
