Norman Fleischer

Fleischer Institute for Diabetes and Metabolism (Fleischer Institute)

The newly established Fleischer Institute for Diabetes and Metabolism (Fleischer Institute) at Montefiore Einstein will serve as a major hub for discovery by conducting cutting edge basic, clinical, and translational research, and offering unique and innovative programs for the care of diabetes and metabolic disorders. Named after Dr. Norman Fleischer in honor of his pioneering research and seminal contributions to the field of diabetes and metabolic disorders, the Institute will continue his work of uncovering the molecular mechanisms underlying type 1 and type 2 diabetes and translating them into novel therapies.

Beginning in the 1970s, Dr. Fleischer built a robust Endocrine division at Einstein, having trained nearly 85 fellows; the division currently has 30 full-time faculty, as well as many trainees. Dr. Fleischer was a consummate physician improving the lives of countless patients with a special focus in recent years on the rising epidemic of diabetes and obesity in the Bronx. Dr. Fleischer’s lifelong commitment to social justice and the Bronx population made an enormous impact on our community which has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the country, with one in three adults living with the disease.

The Fleischer Institute for Diabetes and Metabolism will host leaders, scientists, physicians, nurses, and staff working together to respond to the diabetes and obesity epidemic through research, clinical programs, education, community outreach, and population health approaches. The Institute’s state-of-the-art facility at 1180 Morris Park Avenue, on the campus of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, will be the most comprehensive center to care for and support patients with diabetes in the Bronx community as well as Northern Manhattan, Westchester County, and the Hudson Valley.

Montefiore Einstein is seeking partners to invest in our Institute in order to find new therapies for diabetes and obesity and to improve the health outcomes of local, national, and global populations. By supporting the Fleischer Institute for Diabetes and Metabolism with philanthropy, you help address one of the most significant epidemics of the 21ST century, and continue Dr. Norman Fleischer's legacy of making a world of difference to a world in need.

Join us as we continue the work of a brilliant clinician, researcher, leader, and above all, a kind, generous family member, friend, colleague, and mentor.
