Red Cell Rounds

Educational Purpose 

To present interesting cases with various types of anemia’s to an expert faculty member for a discussion on the analysis of anemia, in particular the inherited anemias. To train fellows in abnormal blood cell recognition from the peripheral blood smear.

Principal Teaching Method 

Case based learning from patients seen on either consult service or in the clinics. The attending is a senior faculty member with extensive experience in both research on red cells and clinical experience in managing patients with hemoglobinopathies and red cell membrane problems.

Most Important Educational Goal 

Exposure of the fellow to the diagnosis and management of congenital hemolytic (and other) anemias, especially the more uncommon types.

Site Resources 

Montefiore is a large hospital with various ethnic populations who have different inherited anemias. In addition, it has a large NIH sponsored Sickle Cell Center from which it draws clinical cases. These conferences are held at the teaching microscope in the Hematology suite.
